To celebrate the 2300th anniversary of the birth of Archimedes—the greatest mathematician/engineer/scientist of antiquity—and to honor his legacy, New York University’s Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences hosted a two-day world conference on its campus in Spring 2013. Admission was free.

Applied researchers, academics, and high-school/college educators from the broad ranges of mathematics, science, and engineering plus science writers, science museum directors, and historians of science were invited to attend. Rather than honor Archimedes within the framework of ancient technology, speakers and presenters focused on the many ways in which Archimedes’ works, principles, and inventions are still being applied today – some 23 centuries after his lifetime.

Applied mathematician and Archimedes scholar, Chris Rorres, chaired the conference. Dr. Rorres has studied and extended the works of Archimedes for more than 40 years
