Friel is widely recognised as Ireland's leading playwright but through the ability of plays like 'Translations' and 'Dancing at Lughnasa' to translate intoother cultures he has also made a major impact on world theatre. This study draws on the Friel Archive in the National Library of Ireland to deepen our understanding of how his plays were developed.
