The past two decades have seen a quiet revolution in satellite-based services. Once the preserve of governments, international bodies, public utilities andlarge corporations, today, the majority of satellite service users are individuals, who can now directly access a wide range of satellite services typically using personal mass-market, hand-held devices. Theses satellite systems now fulfil a variety of personal necessities and aspirations spanning telecommunications, broadcast services, navigation, distress and safety services, remote sensing, in the commercial, military and amateur sectors. It is, therefore, an appropriate time for a book which addresses these services from the perspective of their support for, and functionality delivered to, individual users. Satellite Systems for Personal Applications: Concepts and Technology aims to lay astrong technical foundation towards understanding the basic principles and functioning of these satellite systems for personal communications, navigation, broadcasting and sensing applications. It will also review the trends in relevant satellite related technology The book is divided into 5 parts: 1) Common Concepts (includes aspects common to all applications for example, satellite platform and propagation and signal-to-noise aspects. New emerging platforms arealso covered in addition to more conventional satellite platforms); 2) Communications; 3) Broadcasting; 4) Navigation and 5) Remote Sensing. The authors cover each application area in 2 halves: the first section for each application outlines the fundamental concepts and techniques pertaining to the particular discipline; the second section exemplifies these concepts through selected examples. The final section of the book addresses the evolution of these satellite-enabled applications, taking into consideration the user expectations, technology evolution, regulatory and standardization efforts and the inherent strengths and limitations of satellite systems.
