Prof. Ohshima is worldwide known mainly due to his theoretical work on modeling biosurfaces from the viewpoint of electrokinetic phenomena. However, he collaborates extensively with large groups of experimentalists who test of his theoretical prediction. This combination of theory and experiment makes the monograph especially valuable; the first part of the book addresses the core fundamentals of colloid and interface science--it presents both descriptions of classic works as well as many of Ohshima's original results. The second part starts with the theoretical electrochemistry of of colloids and interfaces, material that has never been covered by competing books because Ohshima has developed many of these concepts himself. The remaining part of this second half of the book addresses the novel topic of electrokinetics of soft particles, and moves on to discuss the structure of biosurfaces. This book is written for scientists, engineers, and graduate students who want to study the theoretical and experimental aspects of the fundamentals of biophysical chemistry of biointerfaces. Its primary purpose is to help them study the fundamentals and current developments in this field. The book starts with fundamental thermodynamics and electrostatics for biointerfaces and moves on to treat several topics within the area including biophysical chemistry of soft interfaces or surfaces (polymer-coated interfaces or surfaces), which serve as good models for biointerfaces. The book covers the electrical double layer around a charged surface or a membrane, the Poisson-Boltzmann equation, electrostatic and van der Waals interaction between two biointerfaces, electro-osmosis on biointerfaces, ion binding, membrane permeation, and permeation with time delay. It also addresses recent, cutting-edge topics such as biofilms and humic substances. (Humic acid is one of themajor components of humic substances (or natural organic matter, the dark brown and major constituents of soil organic matter humus that contributes to soil chemical and physical quality and are also precursors of some fossil fuels. Humic substances make up a large portion of the dark matter in humus and are complex colloidal supramolecular mixtures-- one of the most important properties of HA is its detergent character, i.e. its ability to solubilize such hydrophobic materials. The behavior of HA in aqueous solution is therefore of considerable interest, especially in view of the fact that it exists in many varieties, depending on age and origin, and that its detergent character is strongly influenced by other substances present in the environment.)
