Supervision and evaluation of teachers can be powerful levers for improving teaching and learning, but most principals are stuck using methods that cumbersome, time-consuming and ineffective. In this book, Kim Marshall recommends breaking away from the usual dog-and-pony show approach, in which principals use one or two formalized classroom visits to write end-of-year teacher evaluations. He also discourages use of standardized test scores to evaluate teachers. In place of this, Marshall proposes a broader framework for supervision and evaluation that can more effectively enlist teachers in improving the performanceof all students, especially for closing the achievement gap. The approach also makes better use of the principals and teachers time. Emphasizing trust-building and teamwork, Marshalls innovative, four-part framework shifts the focus from periodically evaluating teaching to continuously analyzing learning. Thisapproach encourages principals to: 1) make frequent, informal classroom visits followed by candid feedback to each teacher; 2) work with teacher teams to plan thoughtful curriculum units rather than focusing on individual lessons; 3)get teachers as teams involved in low-stakes analysis of interim assessment results to fine-tune their teaching and help struggling students; and 4) use compact rubrics for summative teacher evaluation. The book gives principals guidance in how to: Conduct brief , but more frequent mini-observations to see what is really happening in classrooms Provide candid and constructive feedback to teachers Supervise teachers and teams in planning standards-aligned curricular units Engage teachers and teams in analyzing interim assessment results to fine-tune instruction for reaching all students Use year-end evaluation rubrics focusing on a comprehensive vision of high quality teaching The book also includes extensive tools and advice for managing time as well as ideas for usingsupervision and evaluation practices to foster teacher professional development.
