This edited volume focuses on the role of women and the incorporation of women as gamers, participants in gaming culture, and their depictions within video games in general. While an abundance of the discourses on women in game studies has focused on women’s hypersexualized representations in mainstream gaming, there is a growing body of work that focuses on women as developers, women as cultural producers, women’s resistance, activism in gaming, and women’s consumption practices in gaming culture. This volumes begins its scholarly inquiry and cultural intervention from this point of departure. Contributors analyze the interconnections between games as a form of media, gender inequality, and larger societal and structural issues impeding the successful inclusion and progress of women in gaming culture. It provides voice to the silenced and marginalized, offering counter narratives to those post-racial and post-gendered fantasies that so often obscure the violent context of production and consumption. In offering this framework, this volume will be grounded in the concrete situations of marginalized members within gaming culture.
