Graphene-based Materials in Health and Environment

This book gives a comprehensive overview on the potential use of graphene-based materials in two important societal areas: medicine and environment. The authors revise and discuss how the design and engineering of new graphene-based materials can be creatively used for biological purposes. The use of graphene-based materials as delivery vehicles for diagnostics or therapeutics, ultrasensitive sensors, smart responsive substrates for artificial tissue design and biomarkers are described. Moreover, the authors present new insights on their use as sorbent or photocatalytic materials for environmental decontamination in water and gas phase, desalination membranes and as sensors for contaminant monitoring. A special chapter discussing the side effects of graphene-based materials on animals and plants is also provided.
