High schools are actively engaged in a debate over purpose, particularly the degree to which the primary purpose of high school should be to prepare as many students as possible to be college ready. This book will help policymakers understand better the rationale and methods for high school redesign focused oncollege and career readiness. No longer are they two separate tracks. Whetherentering college or a vocational position, students need to be prepared with new skills and knowledge for this century. More importantly, the book will contain many practical ways by which high school faculty can adapt their programsof instruction in the direction of enhanced college/career readiness for all students. College and Career Ready will help improve the preparation of more high school students so that they are able to succeed in entry-level postsecondary courses and positions and, ultimately in college and/or their lives. It presents detailed, practical evidence and guidelines that high schools can use to improve their alignment with postsecondary success.DAVID CONLEY is professor of Educational Policy and Leadership and founder and director of the Center for Educational Policy Research at the University of Oregon.
